The results of these awards become a reference for Japan and the rest of Asia. In 2022, 4,652 wines from 25 countries were judged, the highest number of any edition, showing the growing interest worldwide in a competition focused on the female perspective.

PUPITRE BRUT-GOLD MEDAL
SOL DE NIT BY PUIG RODÓ- GOLD MEDAL
L’ARBOÇ 1919 BRUT – GOLD MEDAL

The CEO of Castell d’Or, Jordi Amell, remarked that “our cavas are highly valued in Japan, a strategic market. The Sakura Awards highlight the perfect match between our wines and Asian cuisine, thus validating the quality of our product and the authenticity of our terroir.” The Castell d’Or Group will be present in the Japanese market at Prowein Tokyo from 10-12 April, Stand 7F-13, where it will present a more comprehensive sample of its wine offer.
The wine market in Japan
Chaired by Yumi Tanabe, an activist and wine educator in the Asian country, the awards have gradually grown and the competition has now become the most important in Asia with more than 4,000 wines from around the world. The organizers state that they have encouraged the evolution of new wine selection criteria from the perspective of Japanese women and that greater promotion of wine culture and greater activation of the wine market in Japan are expected as a result.
The professionals who make up the jury include sommeliers, oenologists, educators, journalists, hotel and restaurant managers as well as representatives from importing companies.
Yumi Tanabe claims that 43% of sommeliers in Japan are women, certified by the Japan Sommelier Association, and 60% of those qualified as “Wine Experts” are also women, putting an end to the idea that the world of wine is mostly male.
